How To Safely Use Portable Heaters

Portable heaters are great to use for many of us because it allows us to stay warm during those times and situations when we have no other way of keeping warm. For some of us we are outside camping and this is the best way to keep warm. For others of us it is a way in which we can save money in electricity costs.

Unfortunately many people will not understand the proper and safe way to use these and will end up by burning themselves or even burning down their homes. As great and efficient as they are they can also be dangerous for us to use. However, we have provided a list of guidelines that should be followed when using these heaters.

Purchasing Safe Portable Heaters

  • Purchase models that are newer and that have all of the required safety features. This is especially true when you are using them around children and pets.
  • The portable heater you choose must have the Underwriter’s Laboratory label on it. This proves that it has been tested and is proven to be safe to use.
  • Find a portable heater that is thermostatically controlled. This will keep it from overheating the room and preserving energy.
  • Measure the size of your room and choose a heater that will match the size. Do not purchase one that is too large for it.

Safely Using Portable Heaters

  • Put the portable heater in an area where people cannot run into or trip over it. Any children or pets must be out of reach of it.
  • Read the directions that come with your heater carefully and make sure to follow them.
  • Never use an old heater that was given to you.
  • If the electrical cord has become frayed then you must immediately stop using it.
  • Keep the heater away from furniture, curtains, and 36“ away from things that can catch on fire. It needs to be in an open area.
  • Place it on top of the floor. It must never be on the surface of the rug or carpet.
  • Never put anything on top of the heater, especially clothes.
  • Turn the heater off when you go to sleep.
